“In my hometown, where the city meets the forest, people find themselves in an almost ritually circumstance.
The wellheads at the edge of the city offer to the community the opportunity to relive this sacred gesture of going towards the water.
As common as it may seem for the ones that go there regularly, the strangest it looks for the unfamiliar eye. Together with the sources, the water devotees become part of the peripheral scenery of the city.” – the artist
“Water is life. It’s a fact, not an affirmation. It represents a basic need. Therefore, in our culture, our civilized society, there’s water at the push of a button, twist of a knob. But even pretty distant from running water, between the slopes of mountains, where my grandma’ used to have a house, water was never too far away, wells were three or four meters deep. No wonder I took it so much for granted. I learned my lesson later, in the plains, down South. Wells were 20 meters deep, and even more. You couldn’t see the bottom of the pit but you could hear the bucket hitting the base. You would reach out half a bucket of water with sand at the bottom.
In Lucian Bran’s almost self explanatory tilted body of work ( Back to wellhead) , the scenario is somehow predictable. The setting is always the suburbs, the periphery, civilization being nearby. You can see the buildings not that far away, you can see people with their plastic canisters, standing out. Some made a little effort to get there. Why do they go there (why don’t we)? For the landscape? The walk? Is the water worth it? With this being said, although appearing romantic by form, the series is not at all romantic by nature.” – Lucian Indrei

“În oraşul meu natal, unde oraşul întâlneşte pădurea, oamenii se regăsesc într-o ipostază aproape rituală.
Izvoarele de la marginile oraşului oferă comunităţii oportunitatea de a retrăi gestul sacru de a merge înspre apă.
Pe cât de comun ar părea pentru noi, cei care mergem acolo în mod regulat, pe atât de ciudat pare pentru cei nefamiliari cu acest peisaj. Impreună cu sursele de apă, devotaţii acesteia au devenit parte integrală a scenariului periferic al oraşului.” –artistul
“Apa este viaţă. E un fapt, nu o afirmaţie. Reprezintă o necesitate de bază. Aşadar, în societatea noastră civilizată, apa apare (ca prin miracol) la apăsarea unui buton, răsucirea unui robinet. Dar chiar la distanţă mare de apă curentă, între coastele unui munte, unde bunica avea o casă, apa nu era niciodată departe, fântânile având trei-patru metri adâncime. Nu e de mirare că nu am apreciat-o suficient. Mi-am învăţat lecţia mai târziu, la câmpie, în Sud. Fântânile aveau 20 de metri adâncime, sau chiar mai mult. Nu-i vedeai capătul dar puteai auzi găleata lovindu-se de fund. Scoteai o jumătate de găleată de apă cu nisip pe fundul ei.
În lucrarea lui Lucian Bran, cu un titlu de la sine înţeles (Înapoi la izvoare), scenariul e cumva previzibil. Locaţia e întotdeauna periferia, suburbia, civilizaţia fiind în apropiere. Poţi vedea clădirile în depărtare, poţi vedea oamenii cu canistre de plastic, ieşind în evidenţă. Unii au făcut ceva efort să ajungă acolo. Totuşi de ce se duc acolo (noi de ce nu)? Pentru peisaj? Pentru plimbare? Merită doar pentru apă? Acestea fiind spuse, deşi aparent romantică prin formă, seria nu este deloc romantică în natura ei.” –Lucian Indrei

Lateral Art Space is an artist-led exhibition and project space located at the Paintbrush Factory in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. It is dedicated to local, national and international emerging artists.
Lateral was founded in April 2012 and is coordonated by three Romanian artists: Dragoş Bădiţă, Cristina Curcan and Lucian Indrei. The project started as a response to the lack of exhibition possibilities for emerging artists.
